With home solar storage systems, you increase the level of self-sufficiency of domestic photovoltaic systems

For owners of photovoltaic systems and home owners interested in domestic PV systems, their own consumption and self-sufficiency are becoming increasingly important. Reliable energy storage and systems are essential for this, as they make it possible to store the power they have generated for use at a later date. In total, home owners with PV systems can increase the proportion available for their own consumption from 30% (without a storage system) to up to 80% by installing a storage system.  

The storage system market is growing rapidly

Battery storage solutions have literally boomed for years. In 2021, a power storage system was added to more than every second PV system (56%) (source: Gebäude-Energieberater trade journal, 8 April 2021). An increasing number of solar power users are becoming aware of the relevance of energy storage systems. Most of them already opt for the possibility of coupling their own PV system with a battery storage solution. According to BSW data, the demand for home solar storage systems increased by 60% in 2021 (source: pv magazine, 9 March 2022). This market growth looks set to continue in order to be able to use more of the power generated on your own roof.

Domestic power storage systems are no longer a pipe dream – they already exist:

  • Hügelshart efficient housing estate

    The "Efficient Housing Plus" estate in the Hügelshart district of Friedberg near Augsburg, southern Germany, is a showcase project for sustainable construction built in partnership with BayWa r.e. The project demonstrates a number of new approaches, including the perfect way to integrate self-sufficient energy concepts into detached house, apartment building and terraced house concepts without compromising on comfort. The installed battery storage systems also help with this.

  • Plus Energy Solar House

    Completely off-grid? The "Plus Energy" solar home in the southern German city of Tübingen proves that it is possible. With intelligent planning and by linking various system elements in a smart way, it is possible to be 80% self-sufficient.

  • Reference system: HUAWEI LUNA2000

    A 9kWp photovoltaic system was installed on this new home in order to "not waste any sunshine". With a 10kW inverter and the battery storage solution LUNA 2000 from HUAWEI with 5kWh, the family intends to reduce its carbon emissions as much as possible. The modular concept of this battery storage solution makes it possible to flexibly extend it with additional battery modules, if necessary. This means that storage capacities of up to 90kWh can be realised even with three inverters. The app makes it possible to display all of the PV system's important data to the end customers quickly and in a way they can easily follow.

How large should your solar storage solution be?

Recommended upper limit of usable storage capacity in detached homes, which depends on the size of the PV system and the annual electricity consumption.
